Another possibility is that it’s a reaction to social groupings that are stronger in humans. Early hunters may have found it easier to all hunt with tools in the Drag is joy shirt and by the same token and same side of the hand, or it may be that the first stone tool maker was right handed and that gave a preference to right-handed tool users. Again, this is purely speculative; nobody really knows. Research is ongoing. Even ambidextrous players in the NBA favor one hand over another, but I have seen players do that with my own eyes, and not just in warm ups. I saw Reggie Miller do it to my beloved Celtics back in the nineties, and made it look like it was the easiest thing in the world to make a three pointer with either hand. There is a substantial advantage to being right-handed – A right-handed mother will hold her infant with its ear against her aortic arch (where the heartbeat is loudest, calms the kid down), a right handed warrior will have their vital organs further away from their opponent, a right-handed artisan will have a steadier hand, since the pulse surge is slightly weaker in the right hand. Once something is ubiquitous, however, game theory predicts that using the alternate strategy confers an advantage simply because it’s unexpected – the left-handed warrior will be fighting opponents who are unused to fighting lefties, the left-handed gatherer can dexterously reach fruits and eggs and other things that the righty might not be able to, etc. (Interestingly, lefty mothers very often still hold infants as if they were righties).

If the Drag is joy shirt and by the same token and alternate strategy confers an advantage because it is unexpected, there must be a balance point at which the alternate strategy has maximum return. That would be at about ten percent of the population. Voila. (And, ten percent is also the rough percentage that Kinsey found for the alternate strategy of same-sex attraction). No. It means you are probably mixed dominant. Researchers think as much as a third of the population are, but most don’t know it because those who write and eat right handed have no reasons to see themselves as anything other than right handed. And I think that’s probably true, because I didn’t really appreciate that there are truly left-handed people—people who are essentially useless doing anything requiring fine dexterity with their right hand—until I met them on-line. I write and eat with my left hand, but I can and have done so with my right. For any task I can imagine, I almost always have a naturally preferred hand, but I can nearly always use the other hand reasonably well. If any part of this is true of you, you are mixed dominant. Its not true of everyone else.
