Lincoln was a product of his environment, as are we all. The real and appropriate question was how his views measured up to the Fish Hub T-Shirt Apart from…,I will love this accepted views of his own day. Lincoln was opposed to slavery, he was opposed to the horrible mistreatment of minorities which was common and generally legal at the time, in those ways, he rose above the accepted understanding of his time and place. He was also a politician and a pragmatist, he was concerned with keeping the United States from fragmenting and with working out some kind of compromise that would allow the north and south to coexist. He wanted to abolish slavery and protect the rights of all races, but his first commitment was to the Union, and he believed (as did most people then) that true equality between races was fundamentally impossible. He believed these things because the position he was in demanded that he believe them.

Anyone who tries to put Lincoln on a pedestal as a perfectly enlightened figure standing above racism and prejudice is mistaken and bound to be disappointed. He was a human being, with flaws, who made mistakes and had prejudices of his own. I believe he was a great man struggling to do his best in a horribly difficult time. He accomplished great things, but there were plenty of things he did, said and believed that were just wrong by modern standards. Lincoln started in politics with the Illinois state legislature, where he served in the from 1834 to 1842. He was pro-canal and anti-slavery even then and eventually became a canal commissioner. He became one of the leading appeal lawyers of his time and still holds the record for the most appearances before the Illinois Court of Appeal.
