Though I want to be clear: queer Lincoln would be awesome! I just don’t know that we have any affirmative evidence to indicate he was. The platonic male intimacy element of this seems to have struck a chord (which I get!), so I wanted to drop this here in case it is of interest: Upon reading Team of Rivals by Goodwin and other wonderful Lincoln biographies, one comes away with the Funny Baltimore orioles bird sitting on the barbell 2023 shirt and I love this vivid realization that Lincoln had several exceptional attributes all living in harmony under a passive facade: he was an astute listener, keen analyst, a skilled politician, and a highly reliable judge of character. Lincoln knew what was going on under the hood within a few seconds of meeting someone. He had native intelligence. Lincoln was an avid reader whose formative years were largely devoted to self education in law along with a comprehensive pursuit of all available literature. Much of his attraction to Mary Todd was possibly that Mary, unlike most women of the era, was extroverted, well read, cultured, spoke fluent French, and was an innately skilled politician.

Lincoln was introspective and an abstract thinker who battled depression throughout much of his adult life, and who navigated a difficult marriage with Mary Todd Lincoln, who also had mental health issues. This portrait aka the Kaplan Daguerreotype has become somewhat of a Salvator Mundi speculation i.e. is this a young Lincoln or is it somebody else? The portrait surfaced in the late 1970s, has been forensically matched but not completely vetted, and – although you will note a lively discussion in the comments below – it could be the youngest known Lincoln image, or not. My limited research has proved inconclusive, so time and more comments may help point the way.
