I wanted to wear perfume when I was pregnant with my daughter. As my body was morphing into something that didn’t feel like my own, I reveled in any reminder of my former self. But almost everything I’d previously worn and loved suddenly felt cloying and intense. As I was more frequently homebound, my nose was too. “I think all this scent freedom, an escape from work and social places where we meet and smell each other every day all the time, is very hard,” says Lyn Harris of Perfumer H and Miller Harris. “I hear people more and more saying how sensitive they have become to smell.” That sensitivity, much like when you’re pregnant, can lead to an all-around scent aversion. “It’s caused by being olfactively overwhelmed,” adds Reilly. There’s also simply a question of perception. David Moltz, perfumer and cofounder of D.S. & Durga, shares a recent conversation with two different customers about the same scented candle. “One customer was like, ‘I can’t believe I bought it, I can’t smell anything, you guys are crazy,’” says Moltz. “And within a few hours, someone else wrote us a different email that said, ‘This candle is so strong, my whole house smells like it.’ Perception of strength really is in the eye of the beholder.”
