A difficult question. With our current system of research, I think you can prove neither their existence nor their non-existence. However, from my own personal experience I found evidence that there is a spiritual world beyond our physical world with at least some sort of active spiritual beings, like a personal guardian angel, that we can not normally perceive with our common senses. But seemingly, some people can, at least at certain occasions. That happened to me too, e.g., in my teens I noticed, I was clairvoyant under certain conditions, but lost it after some years. There was more to come later, but I will leave it at that. By the way, I never took any drugs. In (spiritual) literature you’ll find a lot of people who wrote about having similar experiences and having gained more or less insight into parts of that ‘other side’ of our world. Going back in time, this gift seems to have once been far more widespread amongst humans, hence this knowledge -e.g. of spiritual ‘beings’- was shared by many and over centuries became common ‘folklore’.

I have no particular personal experience of these so-called fairies, but from what I gather, they are first of all, nothing like the Pink Floyd snoopy and woodstock I will see you on the dark side of the moon shirt in contrast I will get this Tolkien/Disney like physical figures, but rather spiritual entities that are connected to the growth of plants. Likewise, there seem to be similar beings involved in the growth of minerals, referred to as gnomes. (Again, no long beards and battle axes, just spiritual forces for which clearvoyant humans created symbolic pictures to describe them at least in some way). If you look at the common picture we seem to have of fairies/elves and gnomes/dwarfs, you can still recognize the corresponding nature of delicate plants vs. ‘robust’ minerals in some way. Anyone who has not personally experienced such inner perceptions, (and the difficulty to describe them adequately), has a perfect right to put the matter aside. Books do not necessarily represent any absolute truth, whether they deal with fairies, religions or atomic structures (which no human being has ever seen either, we can only deduce theories from certain traces and evidences, witnessed by a few specialists, and try to form them into an ever changing physical picture). Thus, in my view, books and pundits can only give hints on possible explanations.
