I don’t think we as a society should sanitize fairy tales. I do appreciate the Pink Floyd time you are young and life is long and there is time to kill today shirt moreover I love this freedom authors have to make changes they feel improve the story. I do appreciate that parents then have choices. Some kids are highly sensitive. Some aren’t. It’s great parents have choices so they can find what suits their own kids’ tastes. Sensitive kids don’t need traumatized. Kids who like more dangerous elements can have them. I like that there are versions of Peter and the Wolf where the duck and the wolf don’t die. My daughter liked that ending better. But the other ending is also available. It was originally written expressly for children. Those deaths would have been facts of life for Russian children. Not so for today’s children so it’s nice there’s a choice. Generally any decision about what’s good for children will be good for some and bad for others. Obviously broadcasters and schools need to make decisions based on what will be least hurtful, which often means removing ideas that some kids are perfectly fine with.

But parents don’t need to make decisions for children. Fables can be fairy tales, but most often they lean toward folktales. Remember that most fairy tales have elements such as royalty, magic users, monsters, magical items, etc. Whereas, folktales are generally more grounded, more relative to the common man. They may have talking animals, but the animals have very human attributes and personalities. The stories themselves often present a dilemma in which a character must decide the right thing to do. The moral is then drawn from that characters action or inaction. Answer: Most enduring fairy tales are told more than just for entertainment. They were used throughout the ages as a method to teach “moral” and “ethics” of their current societies. Some people pointed out that “Beauty and the Beast” was written to persuade young women in France that arranged marriage with ugly guys (“Beasts”) are okay since they should not judge people by their external appearance.
