Words are useful, and concise, and powerful, but language is an emergent (high-level, second tier) phenomenon that rises out of simpler, more basic, preverbal forms of communication.

Music and dance are other emergent phenomena from these same primal modes of communication. They are ways of expressing ideas, but rather than encapsulating those ideas in words and sentences, they encapsulate them in melodic phrases or structured physical patterns. Music is particularly good for expressing complex moods and emotions. Every culture has music because we are built (on a primal level) to pick up emotions from each other, and music is a language that allows us to do that in sophisticated ways. I mean, to make this concrete, think about lullabies. Every mother sings to her child to calm it and put it to sleep, and children respond to that singing well.
