My parents lived cheaply, because it was possible. That meant they could work awhile and then quit and do something else. There were two kinds of gigs for musicians: casual and steady. The years passed and new wars, Korea and Vietnam, came and went. People came back from those wars, or increasingly didn’t go. Both groups continued, sometimes, to live on their own terms. Long hair replaced short hair. The magazine writers coined a new word, hippies, also a scornful, derisive label.

Now it’s 2015. Nothing much is cheap now. We’ve had more wars. The grandchildren of my parent’s generation are struggling with student debt and inadequate jobs. Scornful magazine writers have been replaced by scornful internet writers. But some people still want to live on their own terms. The style of today’s hipsters is just a symbol, but symbols are important. It’s still about freedom. Oh yeah. Hip. My parents and their friends said it a lot. My father would say “Lenny Tristano is back in town. I ran into him up on 66th Street” and their friend Ted would say “I’m hip.” Meaning “I know.” To be hip was to know. The terms ‘woke’ and ‘hipster’ are often used to describe individuals or groups who embrace progressive values, cultural awareness, and social justice issues. The term ‘woke’ originally emerged from African American Vernacular English to describe an awareness of social and racial injustices.
